Record year for large forest fires in Spain in 2014

2014 was a year of several Spanish records; one was the lowest number of forest fires in a decade in Spain.


Fires destroyed a total of 46,818 hectares in Spain, while it was for the same period in 2013 a total of 61,737 hectares. Information and attentive citizens are the two main reasons, says Spain Agriculture Minister, Isabel García Tejerina.


Ministry of Agriculture Food and Environment published the preliminary statistics for nature boards during the period 1 January – 31 December 2014 (still preliminary data for 2013 and 2014), showing that the number of fires in 2014 was 9.754 fires, and it is the lowest in the last decade. Marbella property, The previous lowest record for the last ten years was from 2013, with 10,797 fires.


Of the 9,754 fires in 2014 were 6,741 fires less than one hectare and 3,013 fires were larger than one hectare. In 2013 it was the same digits in the number of fires 7,708 and 3,089. It should also be noted that the average for the last ten years is 15,638 fires annually.


Also, the number of hectares of forest area burnt down is the lowest number in the last decade. Specifically, it burned in 2014 a total of 46,818 hectares, while the figure for the same period in 2013 was 61,737 hectares and the average for the last ten years is 117,034 hectares. The previous lowest number of forest fires over the past decade was 2008, when only 50,322 hectares burned up.


In 2014 there were only seven large fires (over 500 hectares), while last year 2013 was the 17 large fires. Average for large fires over the past decade is 28 fires.


Spain Minister of Agriculture, Minister Isabel García Tejerina explains that combating forest fires has been one of the ministry’s key priorities. Only for 2015, for example is dedicating 79.3 million Euros for just that. Meanwhile repeated García Tejerina repeatedly underlined that the key to success is public awareness and attentive citizens.


The entire 42.85 percent of the fires in 2014 took place in northwestern Spain, spread across the Spanish regions of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country and the provinces of León and Zamora.


In second place with 36.04 percent of the fires are the inner Spanish regions, while 20.46 percent of the fires took place in the coastal regions along the Mediterranean – including inland provinces, only 0.66 percent occurred in the Canary Islands.
